Watch this
This weekend you should watch ‘What is Beauty’ on BBC 2 at 8.30, in part for its view of how beauty works, but also because it features wonderful mosaics. I have an interest in the programme (and possibly a slight influence over the choices) as I live with the presenter, Matthew Collings. Matt discusses ten principles involved in making a beautiful work of art. Two are illustrated by mosaics, firstly from the Bardo Museum in Tunis (probably the greatest collection of mosaic in the world) and and secondly with the narrative cycle from the cathedral of Monreale in Sicily — all six and a half thousand square metres of it.
