Inconvenience
We went to dinner to celebrate my daughter’s safe return from New York. Exciting trip, she’d wooed Sea Monster , been limo driven to a gig at Big Boar Motorcycles in Hicksville, Long Island (where big bellied bikers repeatedly approached to ask if she was Claudine Biggs) and had many experiences too hair-raising or titillating to repeat. Under the influence of her stories, I drove back refusing to acknowledge the existence of speed bumps. Going to the cleaners to pick up his TV suit this morning, Matt broke down catastrophically on the Archway Roundabout as I’d cracked the sump.
Thinking of Mike Rock (Sea Monster’s guitarist) I cleared the oil slick seeping from the hard standing on to the pavement with the only papers I could find in the house — newspapers in Arabic we had been using in the studio, plus old copies of the TLS and the LRB. ‘ Do the English really eat fish and chips out of newspaper?’ he’d asked Claude.
Sump repaired, I am off to York at 5 am tomorrow morning, to oversee the dismantling of our show ‘Five Sisters‘. This summer there have been over thirty thousand visitors, and the Museum has granted it a temporary reprieve. They are keen to see it exhibited elsewhere. Watch this space.
