Show at FAS
Matt and I are currently working on a show for FAS next spring. We work together, but we have different roles. Broadly speaking, I design the paintings, decide on the format, and mix the colours, and Matt paints them. At the moment we are making large paintings, with very transparent colours, put on with small brushes. Like the effects you can achieve by sticking to a particular cutting style in mosaic, brushes make marks that are very specific. You can create a particular kind of tempo by working with brushes of a given size. We are making two large paintings, one in shades of white, the other in a variety of colours. (One of the paintings is illustrated below, from our show ‘English Primitive’ at FAS last year). Brushes used for the white painting must not be muddled up with those used for the coloured painting, as they may carry traces of pigment. Our decision to be rigorous about this caused a problem this week, as in the throes of what we hope is a temporary cash flow crisis, we needed to decide between new brushes and food. My middle son has a job at the moment, and astonishingly, he came to the rescue.
